Excerpts from the Course:
Section 4, - lecture "Pricing"
"There is a basic formula that we can use in order to keep it simple and to create a fair price for what we have to offer and that formula starts with us, the business owners who need to answer the question:
What is my desired annual salary? - this can be a regular salary or draws that you take from the business, but essentially these are the money that you take home from the business. This number has to be realistic based on the average salary in the economy for your field which you can easily find online. According to the website .... a wellness health coach can make between $43,000 - $71,000 per year in Florida. Another website ..., says that a nutritional health coach can make between $19,000 - $68,000 per year, which is more or less what a life coach does as well.
To this number we would add what are the annual fixed costs to operate the business, which is also known as overhead and which we've learned how to identify in the accounting section of the course. Next we would add our desired annual profit, which typically it's 20% above the desired salary and overhead. These three numbers together are giving you your total desired income per year. This is what you are shooting for. Now we'll take that number your total annual desired income and would divide it by your annual billable hours, which is the number of hours you can charge clients for your time. This will probably be somewhere between 50% and 80% of the total hours that you work. The result of this division would be your hourly rate, which is the rate that you would charge in order to make your desired salary, cover your fixed costs, and make your desired profit assuming that you were the number of billable hours that you estimated. In other words the formula makes you add together all the money you want to bring in each year and divide that total by the number of hours you plan to work each year, giving you as a result the hourly rate recommended 2 charge. ****"
Section 11, - lecture " Creating a Compelling Elevator Pitch"
"To clarify, here's an example of a poor-quality elevator pitch:
“My restaurant serves really delicious food and has excellent customer service”. That is a vague description of a restaurant and when most people hear that, including myself, this is what we think: “OK. Good for you, restaurant owner, I'm glad that you think good things about your own restaurant, but there are so many different restaurants that have good food and good customer service. You haven't told me anything to compel me to come to your restaurant versus going to others, therefore you haven’t answered my question: What’s in it for me?
Many business coaches will say that the example was not a good pitch and that it needs more details in order to improve that elevator pitch, so here is a common improved version of it, but hardly good enough for you, our students - to use anywhere, so this is not good either, but here we go: “My restaurant serves classic American cuisine with primarily organic ingredients and a large vegetarian selection”.
Here is my reaction for this pitch: “OK, this sounds a little bit better, because I now know more details, so at some point I may stop by and eat at that restaurant if I happen to be in the mood for classic American cuisine and if I care about organic ingredients, however it's still not persuading enough for many, including myself. It doesn’t make me want to take action now or to compel me to plan to go to that restaurant for sure in the near future.****".
